English translation and study of John Kat'oghikos' History by Rev. Fr. Krikor Vardapet Maksoudian. The History was written in the 10th century by Yovhannes (John) who was a polished historian and also head of the Armenian Church (898-929). As a "universal history" this work begins with Creation, but concentrates on John's own era, the early Bagratid period when kings Smbat I and Ashot II Erkat' ended Arab domination and liberated Armenia from foreign overlordship. John's jurisdiction extended not only over the subjects of the Armenian kings and princes, but also over the neighboring Aghuans and Georgians. An invaluable historical source.
